RH9 : ac97 driver problems. . .

865PERL maiboard is my intel. . .

My RH version is 9.0. . . . .

Xfree86 version is 4.3.0 and Kernel version is 2.4.20-8. . . . .

Alsa driver is intel intel8x0-alsa-1.0.1.sh.gz download from the site. .

After the success install alsa driver and reboot the system, the Soundcard Dectection tells 82801EB AC '97 Audio is found.
Then i go to the Volume Control. but it said "Unable to open audio device '/dev/mixer'. Please check that you have permissions to open '/dev/mixer' and that you have sound support in your Kernel. " so i read the installtion guide of the alsa driver. it tells me to open the "audio mixer" to adjust the "Master" and "PCM" volume sliders. but i cant find the "audio mixer" . could someone tell me where is it? and can the "audio mixer" solve my problem?

Ps i used the method : the alsa installtion script controlled installtion. "sh intel8x0-alsa-1.0.1.sh" coz i cant run it as. " /intel8x0-alsa-1.0.1.sh "tells the installtion guide (it said" permission denied "). but i log in as the root user in the text mode.
